The activities, Sharing Circles, and Experience Sheets in Preparing Students for Success and Leadership in College and Careers are designed to develop all these important life skills in an active and engaging learning environment.

A variety of activities and strategies have been incorporated into Preparing Students for Success and Leadership in College and Careers. You will find discussions, simulations, experiments, games, drama, creative writing, research, and much more. Perhaps the most significant strategy is the Sharing Circle, a unique small-group discussion process in which participants share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a safe, structured environment. Besides developing self-awareness, social and communication skills, the Sharing Circle encourages participants to appreciate likenesses and celebrate diversity, and it is a model of inclusion and interdependence. Sharing Circles provide a perfect environment for students to relate authentically and to feel socially connected.
As an instructional tool, the purpose of the Sharing Circle is to promote growth and development in students of all ages and abilities. Targeted growth areas include communication, self-awareness, personal mastery, and interpersonal skills. As students follow the rules and relate to each other verbally during the Sharing Circle, they are practicing oral communication and learning to listen. Through insights developed in the course of pondering and discussing the various topics, students are offered the opportunity to grow in awareness and to feel more masterful—more in control of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Through the positive experience of give and take, they learn more about effective modes of social interaction. The Sharing Circle provides practice in the use of basic communication skills while relevant life issues are being discussed and valuable concepts learned.
Every activity and Sharing Circle concludes with a set of discussion questions formulated to facilitate the cognitive process. These discussion questions give young people a chance to share observations and insights; they provide an opportunity to analyze, make comparisons, and express personal feelings. Discussion questions give the learner a chance to consider various applications of newly acquired knowledge, skills, and tools. They invite the learner to develop new expectations and goals for the future. Discussion questions connect abstract learnings to real-life situations. Although several discussion questions are provided with each activity and Sharing Circle, we also encourage you to ask additional questions based on your experiences, those of the students, and the flow of the discussion itself.
Through discussion and interaction, learners are given the opportunity to connect the information to their own lives to see how and where it fits and how to make appropriate applications. The format of learning encouraged by the design of the experiences in this curriculum guide is facilitated by creating situations in which information is presented, modelled, practiced, and then discussed with regard to its relevance to the learners.
